FLEA12, Mike Valentine, London

“Recently I have had the pleasure of recording here in London, the Bach Cello Suites.
The choice of cellist was easy, for we have worked with the wonderful Justin Pearson many times before. The choice of Location was also very straightforward, for Temple Church has the most beautiful acoustic and is very photogenic. The choice of microphones, however, was not so straightforward.

I wanted to use a ‘spaced pair’ to include the acoustic space and not add a spot mic at all.  Keeping the mic set up as simple as possible, it would mean the entire pressure of the recording would fall heavily on the shoulders of our chosen mics.

Well,  after testing several contenders,  one pair stood head and shoulders above all others.

The Flea 12’s sweetness and ability to capture the beauty of Justin’s cello, combined with the outstanding acoustics of the Church were literally second to none.  I would not hesitate to use them again and in fact I put my wallet where my mouth is and have bought 4 of these musical instruments!”
